Shade in summer, cover the rest of the year.
A pergola, patio cover, or arbor extends how much of the year your deck actually gets used, built to match the deck or fence it sits next to.
Three ways to cover a space.
Pergolas
Open-beam structures that soften direct sun without closing the space in. The most common way we cover a deck.
Covered decks & patio covers
Single-slope polycarbonate covers — durable, UV-rated panels that keep rain off without the cost of a solid roof. Attached to the house or built freestanding, depending on the space.
Arbors & trellises
Smaller-scale structures, often at a gate or garden entry, or built to carry climbing plants over time.
Three steps, no guessing.
We assess the existing structure
We check what the deck or patio can actually carry before recommending a cover, and tell you honestly if reinforcement is needed first.
A written estimate
Scope, materials, and price in writing before anything starts.
Built to match
Attached to the house or built freestanding, finished to match the deck or fence beside it.

Pergolas & covers, honestly answered.
What's the difference between a pergola and a patio cover?
A pergola has an open beam roof that filters light but does not fully block rain — it is mainly about shade and structure. Our patio covers use single-slope polycarbonate panels, which do block rain, without the cost of a solid roof. We build single-slope polycarbonate covers only, not solid roofing. Which one fits depends on how much rain protection you actually need.
Can you build a cover over an existing deck?
Often, yes — we assess the existing structure on site first, since a cover adds weight and the deck framing needs to be able to carry it. If reinforcement is needed, we will tell you before we start, not after.
Do pergolas and covered structures need a permit?
Permit requirements vary by jurisdiction and by the size and attachment of the structure. Obtaining and paying for any required permit is the homeowner's responsibility under our standard contract — we'll talk through what your project is likely to need, but recommend confirming with your local building department.
Read our permit guide →What is your warranty on a pergola or cover?
The same one-year workmanship warranty as our decks and fences. Manufactured materials carry their own manufacturer's warranty, which we pass through to you.
